MEMORABLE BIRTHDAY

These dates (3&4 May) a year ago I was still in East Timor...
My friends, Yovita & Batista and I travelled from Dili to Viqueque for my bday escape...
It's 183km south-east from Dili and would normally take around 8-10 hours since we have to revolve more than half of Eastern part of Timor...
We decided to stay over night in Baucau...
The next day we continued the trip to Venilale and Ossu where we saw a quite refreshing waterfall...
The interesting part started when we reached Betano where we had to cross a river of 6 meter wide without a bridge, luckily it wasn't deep...
But we weren't lucky enough with the 2nd river we crossed and got trapped in it...
It took us more than 2 hours to pick the car up from the sandy river with the help of people surroundings!!
We were extremely lucky to meet those people considering it was completely out of nowhere and there wasn't any signal in our hand phone...
It was almost 7pm when we finally can continue the journey back to Dili after trying to dig out all the water in the car...
Just to complete the excitement, we had to reach Dili before midnight because Batista had to come back to his camp before than...
It means that the 7-8 hours journey should be reached by less than 5 hours where the roads were hilly and in snake forms...
The adventure didn't stopped there, as we were approaching Viqueque, a few people put a big tree in the middle of the road to block our way...
They were literally carrying the tree laughing as they saw us approaching!
Yovita said that they did this to every car passing their village to ask for money...
Batista who had been in tension since our car trapped in the river, went furious and pulled out a grenade he carried around than threw it off to the people and BOOM!!!
Though nobody hurt (in fact the people were laughing while they're running!), I was in total shocked!! OMG!!!
The only bomb blast that I heard was the one in the marine's show when I escorted the Brunei's chief of army visit in 2004...
All of our cloths were wet from the river, surroundings by 2 meters wild grass, no lights everywhere (because there were no electricity in most of eastern districts of Timor), bad roads plus the tense you felt from Batista..
For the first time in my life I really thought that I was gonna died back there...
But Batista managed to go around the tree so we could continue our journey...
I was really exhausted but couldn't sleep because I was too scared and tensed, we drove through jungle practically...
We had no food and drinks cause we gave them to the people that helped us in the river...
It was completely beyond anything I've ever experienced...
We finally reached Dili exactly on midnight as Batista showed his off-road skills and drove like mad...
My head was totally dizzy, felt like throwing up and my stomach was puffed up out of my wet pants but I had to get some sleep cause the next morning I had an 8 o'clock meeting with the government of Timor Leste's official...
The next afternoon I found out the background story of the "extreme" journey...
I know than why Batista was so tensed along the way and didn't wanna stop even for a minute...
In Feb, before the Ramos Horta shooting, there was a UN' car that burned down in Viqueque by the rebels and most south-east part of Timor was still off limit for UN...
There was a negative reaction to UN's presence in some of the south-east part of Timor where we passed through...
Of course Batista as a Portugal police served under UN knew the situation but he didn't tell us cause he must sensed our fear...
There was a mixed feeling of fear, joy, sad and great relieve knowing that we might not survive...
But it was definitely a near-to-death birthday experience that I will never forget for my entire life...

Than panic started to attack me when I really realised that it's not a dream..
Yup, it's real everybody..
I got the wedding' bouquet in Wowik + Tony's wedding on 16 Aug 2008...
The real "nightmare" happened after that very moment actually...
When everyone started to hustle me with "the question" (when will my D-day be? - red)...
Oughh.. For a while thought I was save... Guess I was wrong...
Fasten your sit belt, here we go again...

ULTIMATE GIFT

It's my last days in Dili after more than 3.5 months in here...
And guest what I got for a gift to remember (and to brag for )...
Yeah people, I finally got into 1 frame with Jose Ramos Horta, the president of Timor Leste, yeay!
This idea was actually only came about a week or two ago when Marco, Herminia, maun Hugo and myself went to Merkado lama to see the bazaar to celebrate the independence...
It turned out that that very hour the president was also visiting it...
So when he passed us and greeted us, I said to Marco that I wanna take pictures with him...
But than again he was surrounded by guards, plus I didn't have the guts to ask him in front of those people...
After that, as I kept nagging Marco to contact her friend, mana Sicha, the president's secretary, to ask whether I can come to his office to take the picture, mana Sicha advised there might be a chance on Monday as he'll be in the Democratic fields to celebrate the world's children day...
So we went there at 5pm and found out there was also Xanana Gusmao...
We had to wait for about an hour until the event finish *plus nervous, lots of sweat and scary looks from his 'Vin Diesel' bodyguards* to finally took the picture...
It's true what the people here say, he's really friendly and nice...
Thanks to Marco, Herminia, maun Hugo, Guna and mana Sicha for all the help to made this come true... I won't forget it...

ADVENTURES IN TIMOR LESTE

It's been 3 months since I stepped my foot in Timor Leste...
And I've been lucky enough to be able to go to the districts...
Out of 13 districts in TL, so far I went (or atleast passed) to 9 of them.. Not bad huh?
Most of them I went with Yovita and Batista, two of my good friends here...
The 1st district that I visited was Baucau district, around 120km from Dili to the east...
The capital is Baucau, the second largest city after Dili...
On the way there, we passed Manatuto as the capital of Manatuto district...
D district where Xanana Gusmao came from...
Before went back to Dili, we went to Laga...

Next district that I went to is Ainaro district...
To the city of Ainaro to be exact, 78km south of Dili...
It's a business trip as I was attending d launching of JICA water project there...
So unlike other trip where we usually went on Saturday, spent the night and went back to Dili on the next day, this trip was a one day trip...
It's exhausted since it's a mountainous snake roads and some roads were in bad condition due to rainy season...
On the way there, we passed Aileu, the city of fog of Aileu district...
Before we got to Ainaro town, we also passed Maubisse, a nice town with cool weather...
It's lovely...

Lautem district was my next destination...
We were headed to Lospalos, 248km east of Dili...
Though it's like Baucau journey which was still during the cureview situation, but the trip to Lospalos was so unpleasant...
We departed very late from Dili and we had to reach there before 10pm, so Batista drove like nuts...
As a result of speeding through snake roads, me and Yovita got really sick during the trip...
Luckily after spent the night in Roberto Carlos hotel in Lospalos, we felt better the next day and continued our trip to Com...
It's a beatiful beach with beautiful resorts...
Too bad I didn't have pictures of Com here...
We also dropped by to Tutuala, to see Tutuala cape from a distance..
At the end of April, Yovita, Marco and myself went to Liquica...
It's only 32 km west from Dili, the capital of Liquica district, so it's only 1/2 hour drive...
This trip came from a conversation during lunch time when we talked about ayata, a kinna fruit like soursoup...
Apparently Liquica is where most of fruit were produced especially ayata, so we went there...
Another interresting place to see here...
Last but not least (I hope) was Viqueque district that we visited on my bday early this month...
It surely was the most unforgetable and adventerous journey so far...
Not just coz it's my bday but also d excitement and d tense we (especially me) experienced during d trip back...
We spent the night in Baucau before we went to Viqueque the next day...
We had to pass Ossu before reaching Viqueque...
On the way back we took the road to Betano and that's where the real adventure begin...
From Betano, we went to Same of Manufahi district to than Aileu and finally back to Dili...
I'll try to tell the summary of this adventurous trip in my indonesian blog (sorry for english reader, u can only see the pictures here)...

Now, during my 2 weeks I have in TL, I can only hope that I could go to Oecussi, Bobonaro, Cova Lima and/or Ermera districts...
Who knows?

LIVING IN DILI

Living in my appartment compound is like living in another world, u don't feel like living in Dili...
Why did I say that?
Just look at the bilboard sign on the side of the road to the compound...

Most of the people that live here is expatriate indeed *except for me of course *
The environment is really nice and secure...
It has nice restaurant with a swimming pool and basket court...

All appartments look modern and a bit western simple style...
*take a look at my appartment here as an example*
I think all the appartment are fully furnished and have other facilities such as internet connection...
*except for indovision in my case as u have to arrange it by yourself*
While outside the compound, just a few meters away on the side road toward the compound, there's still a house that was burned on the 1998/99 and/or 2006 riot..

Coz stability hasn't been established in Dili, people just left their burned houses unrepaired...
Refugee camps concentrated in a few parts of the city...
People living in tents for more than a year which is a big problem for Dili coz the gov can't seem to persuade them to go back to their homeland district..
Conflicts hasn't been completely resolved as it seems that people still divided into eastern and western block...

I found this tank on the side road in front of youth center building...
For most people here this might just have been an ordinary scene...
Soldiers everywhere, especially in an extended emergency state like now...
But for me, it gives me kinna spooky feeling...
It's like anything bad can happen anytime...

TRIED TO BE A VEGY

I remember when JB, a friend from Cbr asked me whether I wanna be a vegy and I said that there's no way I'm gonna be one coz I really love my meat...
But tonight I (almost) become one...
Bit bored with the sausage and still didn't wanna touch the frozen chicken on the frizz, I decided to have salad (only) for dinner...
So I cut the apple & 1 big tomato, stimmed the corn and the brokoli and served it with a thousand island...
And when ate it halfway I realized that it's too much for me, so I quit...
But something just still don't feel right, as if I haven't had dinner..
So I put 2 slices of bread on the microwave and I ate it with cheese as dessert...

1st WEEKEND IN DILI

Life is sure really funny...
On weekend in my home town in Bogor, I would just loooveee to stay at home and do nothing *though the last month I've been busy subtittling movies*...
I didn't like to go out even just to hang out with friends...
And lately I even almost hate going to wedding invitation just bcoz than u have dress up and everything *not to mention the hours of thinking what to wear since it seems that u've wore all the dress*
This weekend it's totally the opposite...
I'm like desperate to find something to do but I don't quiet know what I want *and partly coz it's really hot outside, I don't feel like going out*...
Woke up early in the morning to clean the house and cook rice *coz I really can't cook anything * than straight on to i-net...
I got no channel on TV since the indovision hasn't been set up yet...
*especially with another extention of state of emergency in East Timor for 30 days, I really really need that*...
Luckily my new supervisor, Colin, who's nice enough *yes Colin, I do consider you as a nice guy* took me to the two biggest shops in Dili to buy some groceries...
So now I got a few things to eat and experiment *hopefully my cooking isn't gonna be too bad*...
Ok, I'll try to cook something tonight..

1ST LIVE REPORT FROM DILI

Hi people! I'm in Dili now...
Yup, it's the "Dili" of East Timor...
I flew here on last Sunday (17 Feb 08), just 5 days after the Ramos Horta shooting...
I'm here insya allah until end of June 2008 for the post swap program...
So I'm temporary replacing local staff that take maternity leaves...
I'm handling the health program...

Anyway, though I was feeling a bit scared, but it was an interresting flight from Jkt to Dili...
I took Merpati since it's the only airlines that fly to Dili...
We transited in Bali to change plane, cos the plane from Jakarta at 06.10 (yes people, it's in the morning) is going to Kupang from Bali...
I was on the same plane as Mr. Carlos Jeronimo, the head of Immigration office here...
He's kind enough to chat with me knowing this is my 1st time to Dili..
Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili is a quiet small airport...
You can see UNs everywhere including their basecamp, helicopters, etc...
The picture above wasn't pretty good coz it's taken when the car that picked me up was about to go...
The city was quiet calm and not many people around that Sunday, it's coz of the curfew that the government announced...

We went straight to my apartment in Palm Spring estate near the Australian Embassy in Fatuhada...
The apartment is really nice and quiet big for me as I'm alone..
It's a two storage building and my slot in on the 2nd floor..

Though it's fully furnished, but cooking utilities weren't provided...
So not until two days ago me and Yovita, my friend in the office, went and buy them *like I'm gonna cook other than noodles and fried rice *...
Also the indovision still not working (since we have to arrange it by ourself), the gas just bought this afternoon and the pipe to the washing machine leaked (so I still couldn't wash my cloths)...
Two days ago, the lights went off suddenly around 10pm..
Since I know nothing about electricity, I did nothing and went to sleep instead...
It turned out that the credit for the electricity was zero and we have to buy them...
It's really good I think, so we can control our electricity usage...

Hmm.. where have I gone to this city?
I tried the Portugal food, bacalhau, it's special fish imported from Portugal with fried potato...
It's delicious... But unfortunately my phone ran out of battery that day so I didn't took the picture.. Maybe next time when I come back to City Cafe, promise...

VISIT INDONESIA 2008

This year is the Visit Indonesia year...
End of Dec last year, Ministry of Culture and Tourism launched it...
It was aiming to get up to 7 million foreign tourists with estimated income in foreign exchange of US$6.4 billion...

And as a good citizen , I'll help promoting it...
One of the thing that the government trying to sell is the Indonesia Eco Experience...
Other than the beauty of it's landscapes, Indonesia is rich with wildlifes..
One of them is orangutan...
The word of orangutan were taken from Indonesian, orang hutan which means "person of the forest"...
Their natural habitat is the rainforest, that's why you can find them in Borneo island or Kalimantan...
Unfortunately orangutan has become endangered species due to logging, mining and forest fire that destruct the forests...

End of Nov last year, me and colleagues (boses actually) went to Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan...
We were there basically to see the OCSP project funded by USAID as part of our high level joint mission with the government of Indonesia to the announcement of the Indonesian Forest Partnership to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emission...
To get to Tanjung Puting National Park you can go from Semarang or Pontianak by Trigana or by IAT to Pangkalan Bun airport...
We flew on a small plane of Trigana from Semarang...
From the airport, we went to Kumai port which took us about 20 minutes ride...
We crossed the Kumai river by speed boat from Harry's travel to Rimba Lodge, situated inside the National Park...
It was the first 45 minutes exciting ride due to the fact that I can't swim and it turned out that we have to travel by speed boat during our 2 days trip there to save times, yeay!!
I know for sure now what it's like to be in the Fear Factor...

During our trip, we were honoured to be accompanied by Prof. Birute Galdikas, a wellknown primatologist and the president of Orangutan Foundation International (OFI)...
She has dedicated over 30 years of her time to study and help orangutan, wow!!
We visited Camp Leakey one of the orangutan feeding point...
There's an information center on orangutan, you can get info on principle things you have to know about orangutan...
We met Akmad and Atlas there...
She's one of the eldest orangutan female that regularly come during the feeding time...
Atlas is her youngest child of 5...
You'll know this coz there are family trees of orangutan that come to Camp Leakey including Akmad family...
It was facinating to see the effort of Prof. Galdikas and OFI staff has put to save orangutan from extinction...
We also went to the other feeding point, Pondok Tangguy...
Overall it was a very memorable journey for me...

Since early May this year, I got new post in the environment sub-unit...
On 29 March 2007 the Australian Government launched a $200 million Global Initiative on Forests and Climate to advance the global effort to tackle climate change and protect the world's forests...
So it's kinna 'back' to old job and issue..
Why issue?
Coz in my old office I once handled 3 posts at the same time...
Now, it's dejavu...

Last week I took leaves...
I was pretty excited and looked forward, though I didn't have any specific plan on how to spend it...
So... I spent most of it by online in the i-net *though the d**n slow line almost killed me*...
Went to beauty salon *it's a must agenda for most women*...
And baby sitting *actually it's marriage sitting*...
We have a female 'visitor', Puspa, came last Friday to be married to one or all of our boys...
But apparently so far it's only om Jojo (read: Om hoho) that put interrest to marry her...

U were such a great and kind leader...

In every staff meeting u never tired to 'push' us to take leaves or even small breaks whenever we feel enough...
And u would add it by saying “I’m serious!”…

I still remember short messages that u often sent me if I was the duty officer of emergency phone…
When I have to report and update emergencies during weekends or holidays…

It means a lot to know that somebody appreciates what you’re doing…

It’s the saddest time for all of us…

This Saturday (March 3) I supposed to have fun in Java Jazz Festival 2007...
It's a yearly jazz biggest event in the country...
Instead I lied on my bed coz of bad throat inflammation since 2 days before...
Since a month ago I was busy looking for discount ticket...
And just a week before the show I got it...
But I couldn't use it.... So Pumpkin and Jaya that used them...

As usual, I had to seek for updates on casualties etc with IFRC, BMG...
From its size, it's tsunamigenic...
As a result, I barely watched Jomblo the series, one of that I looked forward to every sunday night...
Gosh... Couldn't I get some peace around here?
I mean, I love to help people, really...
I dunno... Guess it's just not good time...

I was going to join this year 2nd Indo Defence on 22-25 Nov 06...
Coz I was determined to participate again after I finished my job as liaison officer (LO) for Brunei Darussalam delegation 2 years ago...
But since this Nov I have 'heavily' jobs to do in the office, I couldn't take leaves...
So I was absent this year...

I remember the fun of hanging out with other LOs..
Auzie, Muty, Bunga, Ajeng + Nadin...
We called ourselves as "UI Gank" since we're (are & were) all study (ied) there...
So happened we're all roomates...

D early woke up, turn of bathroom usage, unorganized sleeping area, late come back to d room...
The last one would've been me since d head od Brunei' army that I liaised just happened 2 be d one w/ heavy schedule...
Not until 11pm I would come back to d room found everyone else had slept...
But in d end, I was d one who had big tips so it's all worthed...

But overall it's a good and precious experience...
To broader ur network for one thing...

Didn't had a clue what the movie was about...
Who were the casts...

Just trying to stick with my 'will' to watch all Indonesian movies except horrors...

The players were Winky Wiryawan (Bima), Dinna Olivia (Tasya) and new comer and also co-writer, Adilla Dimitri (a.k.a Wulan Guritno's boyfriend) as Alit...
The story was about Alit's last day in San Francisco before he haded back to Jakarta for good...
Triangle love between the three of them...
And big tragedy that changed their lives...

It's kinna dull movie with slow story...
Rumor has it that originally it's a graduation project for the writer and director, Rinaldy Puspoyo...
Maybe that why Winky played so plain as he's just 'added' to the movie to attract audience...

But overall for me it's not a recommended movie to watch...

It's ages ago that I saw the press screening of The Lake House...
*I didn't even remember when it was exactly... It's coz of the d**n speedy that just died this couple of weeks that made me offline for like a century*
Anyway, the movie didn't made any particular impression to me...
Except that it was....
ONE OF THE BEST ROMANTIC MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN!!

I mean it's really unlike any romantic film...
The chemistry between Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock is just tangible...
*Maybe coz they're 'hooked' up before in Speed*
They were successfully revealing real human feelings...
Their performances just swept you away...

Picking Chicago as the set just completes it...
Chicago's impressive architecture is used to great effect...
For those who aren't into romantic movie, you would just fall for the cinematography...
It's gorgeous! Creating a cold, atmospheric setting...

The plot may be a bit out of the ordinary...
"Implausible" some say...
But that's the great thing about it...
You'll get to free your fantasy without time and logical boundary...
And when you think about it, it's actually pretty simple and honest...
It comes down to a story about how two peoples lives change when they allow themselves to connect...

So over all, I ADORE the movie!!
*despite the fact that I am Keanu FREAK*
It's DEFINITELY A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED MOVIE!!
Don't go in expecting it to all make sense, but go in with an open heart and open eyes and let it win you over...

But since things were pretty hectic, it just seems to be a bit stale...

Anyway, after that World Cup 2006, I just been kinna into a soccer thing...
Especially into Fabio Cannavaro...

Isn't that something?

YIPPIIIII!!! ITALY GOES TO FINAL!!

After taken out Germany by 2:0 last night...
It's a splendid victory indeed!

It's a good game they both played...
90 minutes game still couldn't produced any goal...
2 x 15 minutes extra time had to be played...
But in 119' Fabio Grosso miraculously shaked Lehmann's castle!
And 2 minutes later (120+1') Del Piero added another score making sure Italy's road to Berlin has no obstacle...
Italy has showed their true character among 60,000 Germany fans against them...

I'm SO HAPPY that they WON!!...
They managed to fullfil their 12 years cycle to play in the final...
GO GO ITALY !!

Yesterday I watched Superman Returns with Cyntha, Jaya & Lia...
I missed the press screening on Tuesday, 28 June in Setiabudi 21 at 09.00..
*Couldn't escaped from the office *

The movie is quiet long, 2.5 hours I think...
But u wouldn't even felt the long hours, especially ladies...
You will be spoiled by Brandon Routh...
*Gosh, he's a babe *

This movie is not a remake of any other Superman movie...
The charm of Brandon Routh could even compete with Christopher Reeves, the former Superman...
*I think even exceeded*
The producer Bryan Singer made the right decision by choosing him...
But I didn't agree with Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane...
I think she doesn't have the 'smart' look as Lois should be...

For those of u that might expect more action, u would've have to be dissapointed with this movie...
Drama lover on the other hand would adore it...
There are a few things that I spotted from this movie..
I have to give thumbs to the wardrobe for keeping Superman's hair looks good even when he's in the ICU room...
*u can even see that one curl*
But unfortunately they missed it with Lois's hair after she got bumped on the plain on the first scenes...
Aren't cryptonites suppose to take all Superman's power?
How come he still managed to throw the new island out of space when it's full of it??!@#
And what's with the kid? For sequel???

And I have to protest about the all age movie thing...
There are violences in that movie that children would imitate without even realise the danger of it...
They saw their hero done it...

So, I would've to give only 2.5 for this movie...

Spain lost 1:3 over France last night...
The only goal was made by David Villa through penalty at 28'...
While the 3 goals from France were made by Frank Ribery (41') , Patrick Vieira (83') & Zinedine Zidane (92+')...
It's the 2nd goal from France that really broke me...
If only Carlos Puyol didn't tackled Thierry Henry, there wouldn't be any free kick and the goal wouldn't' have happened...
But I must admit that France play well last night...
And the goal made by Zinedine Zidane was beautiful...

Though this defite broke his heart on his bday,
but Raul tried to calmed Fabregas
With Spain lost, my hope now goes to Italy and Brazil...
Ukraine will meet Italy on 30 June,
while Brazil will match France on 1 July...

The first one is Failure To Launch...
Since I saw Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey are on casts...
I figure it's gonna be interrested to see...
I mean I love Sex and The City and How To Loose A Guy In 10 Days...

But the movie turned out to be just like any other comedy romantic movie...
I mean it's just so american stereotype film...
You can guess where the story will go and even what's the end will be like...

But since Matthew McConaughey still expose his charms here, I enjoy watching it...

I saw this movie the first week of its opening...
*gosh, I really should've posted this ages ago shouldn't I*
Drove by great curiosity of hearing how great the book is...
*Yes, I haven't read the book till now...
I know... I know... A great thing I missed here... Workin' on it...*

I think it's a good movie...
Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman have done a good job in delivering it...
Viewers indulge by lots of famous spots in France...
And I think the cast done a good choice with Audrey Tautou to play as Sophie Neveu...
*You might recall her in Amelie*

But I think the character of Prof Langdon wasn't the right choice to fall to Tom Hanks...
Though maybe it's the Oscar nomination that they're after, still...

Well, overall I still like the movie and recommend you who have not watched it to see it...
My personal rating would be 3,5!

I wasn't interrested to watch the movie at first...
Coz I had this image that somehow there's gonna be sea monster take part in it...
But than my cousin, Margie told me that it's like Titanic thing...
So I thought, Ok, that's one of my fav movie, why not go seeing it...

Well, to me, it's like just seeing MI3...
There's no thrill as I expected it would be...
I mean, sure the effect was good... especially when the giant tidal wave hits the boat...
But I couldn't find any deep story in the movie...
There's giant wave coming in the middle of nowhere out in the middle of the sea...
While in many review I read, in the old movie back in 1972, Poseidon Adventure, people were told of the earthquake in Greece that trigered the tsunami...

Then the story of the characters also wasn't told enough...
There's Dylan Johns (John Lucas) who is a Navy vet that turns into professional gambler...
An ex NY mayor who once a firefighter, Robert Ramseys (Kurt Russel) that worry too much on his daughter Jennifer (Emmy Rossum)...
But that's about it...

And lots of confusion in the story too...
Why only 9 of them of the entire cruise that struggle to reach the surface to survive...
The scene of the little boy, Connor (Jimmy Bennet) washed away and separated from the group and how Dylan just so happen could saved the boy's life...
All happen just like that...

And just like most of American movie, the hero stays a hero in someway and the 'naughty character' who once a good man turn out to be the real hero of all...

But I guess since I watched it in a right moment, I kinna enjoy it...
It kinna remind me a bit of Daylight, still my fav disaster movie of all time...
Where the heroic side of you just floaded you while seeing it...
So, to me it was an OK movie... I rate it 2 (out of 5)...
